Strengthening efforts to meet targets
According to the Global Seaweed Coalition, Madagascar currently produces around 3,000 tons of dried seaweed per year, with an export value estimated at 3.5 million USD. However, Madagascar aims to increase this production tenfold by 2030, reaching 30,000 tons.
During the national workshop on sustainable seaweed farming in Madagascar, the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Paubert Mahatante, emphasized the importance of strengthening efforts to reach the goal of producing 30,000 tons of dried seaweed by 2030.
He explained that achieving this will require appropriate strategies to combat diseases that can affect seaweed and the implementation of specific laws. The ministry also plans to create a « seaweed strain bank » to preserve and develop seaweed farming while promoting local job creation.
Seaweed plays a significant role in the environment and various sectors such as food, medicine, cosmetics, and even energy. Given the rising international demand, a strategy was developed during the workshop to promote this growing sector.
