Morocco – China: Innovative Partnership for Green Energy

On February 15, 2025, Morocco and China took a significant step forward in their collaboration on sustainable development by opening a green energy lab in El Jadida. This ambitious project aims to promote research and innovation in the field of renewable energy. A crucial sector for Morocco’s energy future and for the fight against global climate change.

Morocco: Key player in renewable energy development

Morocco, at the crossroads between Europe and Africa, has always been a key player in the development of renewable energies. With an average annual sunshine of 3,600 hours and considerable wind resources, the country has put in place ambitious policies to diversify its energy mix. In 2023, Morocco reached 38% of its installed capacity in renewable energy, with a target of reaching 52% by 2030.

China is the world leader in renewable energy, accounting for nearly 40% of global installed solar and wind capacity. The partnership between these two nations is part of a shared desire to develop sustainable solutions and share advanced technologies.

El Jadida Laboratory: An Innovation Hub

The laboratory inaugurated in El Jadida is the result of an investment of USD 20 million, funded in part by the Chinese government. This research center will be dedicated to the study and development of green technologies, particularly in the areas of:

  • Solar energy
  • Wind energy
  • Green hydrogen

The lab is expected to employ approximately 100 researchers and technicians, fostering local innovation and job creation.

The lab’s facilities will include state-of-the-art equipment for research on solar panels, wind turbines and energy storage systems. In addition, partnerships with Moroccan and Chinese universities and research institutions will encourage academic exchanges and build local capacity.

Objectives of the Partnership

The inauguration of this laboratory is part of a broader strategy to strengthen cooperation between Morocco and China in the field of renewable energy.

  • Accelerating the energy transition: The laboratory will play a key role in accelerating Morocco’s energy transition. In particular, by developing technologies adapted to local needs and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Promoting innovation: By fostering research and development, the lab aims to position Morocco as a regional hub for green technologies, thereby attracting foreign investment.
  • Building local capacity: Through training and awareness programs, the lab will help train a new generation of renewable energy experts in Morocco.
  • Contributing to climate goals: By developing sustainable solutions, the lab will help Morocco meet its commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in line with international climate agreements.

Economic and environmental impact

The impact of this lab will not be limited to research alone. Indeed, it is expected to generate significant economic benefits for the El Jadida region. It is estimated that the project could contribute to a 5% increase in local GDP over the next five years through job creation and investment attraction.

On the environmental front, the laboratory should also play a crucial role in reducing CO2 emissions. By developing more efficient technologies and promoting the use of renewable energy, Morocco could reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030. This initiative thus contributes to the fight against climate change.

A model for South-South cooperation

The partnership between Morocco and China for the development of this laboratory is also an example of South-South cooperation. By sharing their experiences and technologies, both countries are showing that it is possible to work together to address global challenges, while respecting local specificities.

This initiative could inspire other developing countries to engage in similar projects, thereby promoting sustainable development on a global scale. Indeed, cooperation among southern nations can offer solutions tailored to local realities, while benefiting from technological advances in more developed countries.

Promoting sustainable and responsible development

The inauguration of the laboratory dedicated to green energies in El Jadida marks a turning point in cooperation between Morocco and China. This ambitious project, which combines innovation, sustainable development and job creation, is a concrete example of how countries can work together. This includes building a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

At a time when the world is facing unprecedented environmental challenges, initiatives like this one are essential to promoting sustainable and responsible development. Morocco, with the support of China, is thus positioning itself as a key player in the global energy transition, paving the way for a future in which renewable energies play a central role in the fight against climate change.
