The World Education Forum brought together 140 countries, including 38 African nations, to identify the best education systems based on skill development. The report used overall professional competence levels, as well asthe quantity and quality of education in each country, to determine its criteria. The report highlights that digital literacy, interpersonal skills, and the ability to think critically and creatively are key factors taken into account.

Education progress in Africa

The growth of education in African countries is leading to the implementation of better academic standards to create a literate continent. While many African countries are still developing, some have made significant strides in the field ofeducation.

As Nelson Mandela once said, « Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world ». Here are the 10 African countries with the best education systems to date.

Seychelles

An East African island nation with a population of 98,347, Seychelles is the first and only African country to have fully achieved UNESCO’s education for all goals. The country also boasts the only African education system ranked among the top 50 globally, placing 43rd, ahead of Ukraine, Hungary, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates. It holds the position ofthe best education system in Africa, with a score of 69.3 points.

Tunisia

Tunisia’s education system scores 61.4 points, making it 71st globally. The country allocates 20 % of its national budget to education and ranks 49th in terms of schooling expectancy and 51st for the student-to-teacher ratio in primary education.

Mauritius

Mauritius ranks 3rd in Africa with 61 points in the education system and is 74th globally. Schooling in Mauritius is mandatory until the age of 16. The country also ranks 47th globally in vocational training, thanks to its reputation for offering high-quality programs.

South Africa

South Africa has a literacy rate of 94 %. The country ranks 4th in Africa in terms of educational development, scoring 58.4 points. It is also 84th globally in education.

Algeria

Algeria is the second-best country in North Africa for its education system. It ranks 5th in Africa with 57.4 points, and the country’s literacy rate is 75 %.

Botswana

Botswana ranks 6th in Africa with a score of 56.7 points. It also holds the 92nd position in the global education system ranking. With a population of 2.3 million, Botswana has a literacy rate of 88 %.

Kenya

Kenya is 7th in Africa with 55.4 points and is the 95th best country in the world, with a literacy rate of 78.7 %. The education sector accounts for 17.58 % of the Kenyan government’s budget.

Cape Verde

Cape Verde ranks 98th in the global education system and 8th in Africa, with 53.3 points.

Egypt

Egypt ranks 9th in Africa with 52.8 points. The country also ranks 99th globally in literacy rates, with a literacy rate of 71 %.

Namibia

Namibia has a population of 2.34 million and ranks 100th globally in the education system and 10th in Africa, with a score of 52.7 points. The literacy rate in Namibia is 88.2 %.
