Heart disease: Mauritius participates in international research

The country highlights its expertise

The management of heart disease and diabetes was the focus of discussions between Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam and two medical experts, Professors Derek Yellon and Malcolm Walker, on April 2, 2025. The meeting, held at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis, provided an opportunity to take stock of the progress made in Mauritius in the fight against these non-communicable diseases.

Since 2007, the country has made significant progress in the management of heart disease. Professor Walker noted that the country has been a key player in major clinical trials, including a study published in 2014. The specialist also announced that the island would be involved in a new research project on heart attacks, which will include eight other African countries. This study aims to deepen understanding of these attacks and implement effective solutions to reduce them. Diabetes, which affects a large proportion of the population, was also discussed during this meeting. Professor Yellon praised the efforts made to improve the care of diabetic patients, particularly through prevention programs and specialized care. These initiatives have led to significant improvements in the management of the disease in Mauritius.

Both experts emphasized the importance of continuing collaboration with Mauritius, which plays a fundamental role in research into these diseases. Thanks to these efforts, the island is well positioned to strengthen its position as a regional leader in the fight against heart disease and diabetes.
