Circular economy: Mauritian companies are mobilizing

A summit to rethink the economic model and protect the environment

On March 24, 2025, the Responsible Business Summit took place at the Caudan Arts Centre. This event brought together private sector leaders and government officials to discuss sustainable development.

The Mauritian Minister of the Environment, Rajesh Bhagwan, opened the ceremony and called for a change in business practices. The summit was organized by five major private companies. This forum allowed participants to exchange ideas and reflect on strategies to transform the business sector in a sustainable manner. The Minister explained that the current economic model, based on the “take-make-dispose” approach, is no longer viable. Bhagwan therefore proposed replacing it with the circular economy.

The official also encouraged reuse, refurbishment, and recycling to reduce waste and conserve natural resources. The forum was attended by prominent figures such as the Minister of Financial Services, Jyoti Jeetun, and the Minister of the Environment, Joanna Bérenger. These discussions reinforce the government’s commitment to a more environmentally friendly future.
