Initiatives for a greener Mauritius

Efforts to Reduce Waste

On March 18, 2025, Global Recycling Day highlighted the importance of waste management in preserving resources and combating climate change.

Despite its third-place ranking after reduction and reuse, recycling remains essential for a sustainable future. In Mauritius, PIM Limited and PIM Recycling have brought together various stakeholders to promote this essential cause.

The Minister of the Environment, Rajesh Bhagwan, pointed out that 46% of household waste produced in Mauritius is recyclable, but only 4 to 5% of it is actually recycled. This low rate illustrates enormous untapped potential, particularly for plastic waste, which represents 14.5% of the island’s annual solid waste. Every year, millions of tons of plastic end up in the oceans, threatening marine biodiversity.

To encourage a change in mindset, the government has launched a multi-phase waste sorting project with the aim of reducing the volume of waste sent to the already overcrowded Mare-Chicose landfill. This program also aims to support local businesses specializing in recycling, a sector that remains fragile despite significant efforts.

At the same time, educational initiatives are being implemented in schools to raise awareness among younger generations about environmental responsibility. Recycling is not just a one-time action; it requires a transformation of consumption habits. Thus, by adopting more sustainable practices, everyone can contribute to a greener future for Mauritius and beyond.
