Measures taken to stabilize electricity supply in Mwali
Mwali Island is facing a delicate energy situation following the failure of one of its two generators. However, the arrival of a third generator, among the ten recently delivered, offers new prospects.
This generator, which will be commissioned shortly, will strengthen the electricity supply. According to Nassur Ali Soilihi, Technical Director of Sonelec in Mwali, the introduction of photovoltaic energy will ensure a stable power supply during the day.
The Secretary General of the Government, Nour-El Fath Azali, accompanied by the Minister of Energy, Aboubacar Saïd Anli, and the Minister of Finance, Ibrahim Abdourazak, visited the Fomboni thermal power plant on March 16, 2025, to assess the situation. The objective was to monitor the progress of the work and identify potential problems in order to ensure stable energy for the island’s residents.
During this inspection, the Secretary-General highlighted the government’s efforts to meet the island’s energy needs, while also highlighting the ongoing challenges at the thermal power plant. The thermal power plant currently has three generators: two Caterpillars and one Mitsubishi. The Caterpillar generator is operational, while the other will require an overhaul soon. The third engine, in perfect condition, will be commissioned to increase production capacity.
To ensure lasting energy stability, it is necessary to connect certain regions to a more reliable power grid. The government is committed to quickly resolving these issues. In the near future, a one-megawatt solar power plant, financed by the World Bank, will be installed to provide daytime power and strengthen the electricity supply.
