Limited impact, but precautions needed in Toamasina
The depression system Faida continues its progression towards Madagascar but in a weakened form. While the province of Toamasina prepares for strong winds and heavy rains, La Réunion remains under the influence of the storm. After a long period of drought, the island benefits from a hydric respite.
Initially heading towards Madagascar with the potential for intensification, Météo France has downgraded Faida to a simple disturbed area due to unfavorable environmental conditions limiting its development.
On Tuesday, February 4, 2025, the tropical storm is expected to make landfall near the city of Toamasina. Despite its reduced intensity, authorities urge caution as strong winds and heavy rains could cause localized flooding.
Weather conditions are also deteriorating in Antananarivo but to a lesser extent. After its passage over Madagascar, the cyclone is expected to re-enter the Mozambique Channel on Wednesday. Forecasts indicate a possible intensification towards Mozambique by the end of the week.
In La Réunion, Faida is moving away, leaving beneficial effects in its wake. After weeks of shortage, the rains associated with the tropical storm are a relief for the residents of Saint-André. The Cise has temporarily lifted water restrictions.
However, specialists remain cautious : these rains, though soothing, do not make up for the water deficit. « They provide respite, but are not enough to make up for the rainfall deficit », emphasizes Sébastien Langlade, head of cyclone forecasts at Météo France. No major rainy episodes are forecasted, so keeping water vigilance is necessary.
