In 2015, Madagascar received the “Fine Cocoa” label from the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO), recognizing the exceptional quality of its beans. According to Nans Mouret, head of cocoa production at Valrhona, “Madagascar is the only country where 100% fine cocoa can be obtained, which is an undeniable advantage for the global chocolate industry.“
Making Thomas Pesquet an Ambassador of Malagasy chocolate is a symbolic gesture that underscores the international renown of Madagascar’s cocoa. Valrhona, which sources Malagasy beans, recently drew attention by sending chocolates to the International Space Station with astronaut Thomas Pesquet.
The launch of the Global Youth Leadership for Sustainable Cocoa (GYLSCO) program was also announced. Supported by national and international partners, GYLSCO demonstrates Madagascar’s commitment to promoting high-quality, sustainable, and efficient cocoa production. It places significant emphasis on youth education, employment, and innovation. This approach reflects a shared vision of ambitious and responsible agricultural development. Madagascar’s cocoa industry is flourishing and beginning to hold a prominent position in the national economy.
