National needs are estimated at approximately 307,000 tons
In 2023, Madagascar’s aquaculture production exceeded 30,000 tons. However, this quantity remains significantly lower than the national needs, which are estimated at 307,000 tons per year.
According to the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Madagascar has a production potential much higher than the current output. Currently, Madagascar has 17 Aquaculture Emergence Zones (AEZ). According to the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, it is essential to establish 70 AEZs by 2030 to reach the goal of 307,000 tons. There is also an issue with fry production: while the country needs 600 million fry per year, the current production is 40 to 50 million.
Madagascar’s largest AEZ is located in Ivakoana, in the Anivosoa fokontany, a rural commune of Imarofarihy, in the Fitovinany region. The ministry informs that construction work will be completed within three months. With its versatile potential, this infrastructure could produce up to 9.2 tons of fish per production cycle, reaching 18 tons per year thanks to two sequential production cycles.
This production unit stands out as a center of excellence with its integrated laboratory and high output. The infrastructure is used by students and researchers to conduct studies and research on improving genetic heritage.
