National action plan for sustainable development
On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, the Mauritius Prison Service (MPS) unveiled a new biogas facility at the New Wing prison in Beau Bassin, marking a significant step toward environmental sustainability.
Rajesh Bhagwan, Minister of the Environment, Solid Waste Management, and Climate Change, officiated at the event, emphasizing the pressing climate challenges Mauritius faces as a small island developing state. He announced the upcoming introduction of a National Action Plan for Sustainable Development, designed to enhance the quality of life for Mauritians, reduce the island’s vulnerability to climate change, and contribute to global environmental goals.
The government is prioritizing sustainable waste management through innovative and cost-effective solutions for processing organic waste. The minister further revealed plans to incorporate constitutional amendments guaranteeing the right to a healthy environment and nature conservation, demonstrating a firm commitment to sustainability at the highest legislative level. Highlighting the responsibility of every citizen, Bhagwan called for collective action to safeguard the environment for future generations. “The path to a greener Mauritius begins with all of us,” he stated, urging the population to strengthen their efforts in building a resilient and sustainable island.
