Seychelles’ National Biodiversity Action Plans

Promoting biodiversity integration

A tripartite workshop brought together members of the Seychelles Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, NGOs, and the private sector. The GBF-EAS initiative support project aims to present the results of ongoing consultations.

The GBF-EAS project, supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), seeks to promote early actions to implement the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The findings will help align National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP) and facilitate biodiversity financing.

The three key studies primarily focus on national oversight of marine and terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystems. The first study identifies threats, weaknesses, and priority measures to guide the NBSAP. The second involves an analysis of the feasibility of projects aimed at financing biodiversity in the maritime transport sector. This study assesses the impacts of this sector on biodiversity and explores the potential implementation of a cruise ship tax, in line with the Seychelles Biodiversity Finance Plan (2019).

The third study evaluates gaps and requirements in political and institutional frameworks related to biodiversity. It provides an in-depth analysis of the legal and policy regimes to assess their compliance with the Global Biodiversity Framework while offering recommendations to address institutional weaknesses and promote biodiversity integration.
