Pivotal role in reducing carbon dioxide
Madagascar’s participation at COP 29 marks the official establishment of the « net zero » countries coalition. As one of the four founding members, Madagascar, likely part of the coalition named « G-Zero », is helping to lead this significant initiative.
The G-Zero coalition unites countries recognized as « carbon-negative » or « carbon-neutral ». In climate diplomacy terms, they are labeled as « net zero » nations and countries that absorb more carbon than they emit. Madagascar, like its coalition peers, is seen as a vital part of the planet’s environmental « lungs ». According to a statement from Madagascar’s Ministry of Environment, these countries play a critical role in reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide.
On the second day of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 29), the G-Zero coalition was officially launched. This net-zero coalition includes Madagascar, Suriname, Bhutan, and Panama. G-Zero aims to unify the diplomatic voices and resources of its members to take a prominent stance in climate negotiations.
Industrialized nations continue to face challenges in meeting their climate declarations. Since COP 29 began in Baku, the primary focus has been on climate finance. Financial support and compensations are to be provided to the least polluting countries, including those in the « net zero » category, who nonetheless experience the severe effects of climate change. Developing nations are advocating for a funding reassessment beyond the level established at COP 21.
