Exchange of best practices in tourism
Viviane Dewa, Madagascar’s Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, met with Colombia’s Vice President, Francia Marquez, during the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) on Biodiversity, held from October 21 to November 1, 2024, in Cali, Colombia.
The meeting aimed to enhance the international visibility of both countries. Through their discussions, the two leaders exchanged best practices in tourism and handicrafts, working to position Madagascar and Colombia as premier destinations for sustainable and eco-friendly tourism. Tourism in Madagascar accounts for up to 25 % of its GDP, contributing over half of the nation’s export revenues.
Vice President Marquez, who plans an upcoming tour of Africa, expressed her intention to make an official visit to Madagascar in 2025, accompanied by Colombian investors. Additionally, a cooperative agreement has been established with Colombia’s Ministry of Tourism to jointly promote both countries as leading tourist destinations.
In this effort, Colombian producers will soon travel to Madagascar to create audiovisual content, further boosting the island’s international profile. While in Cali, Minister Dewa also participated in a panel focused on alternative and solidarity-based economies, underscoring Madagascar’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and responsible tourism model.
