Expanding international air connections
Seychelles aims to expand its international air connectivity, with government officials announcing discussions to secure more direct flights to the island nation.
Transport Minister Antony Derjacques and Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) Director General Gary Albert recently attended the International Civil Aviation Negotiation Conference (ICAN-2024) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. During this event, Seychelles held talks with about 17 countries, reaching agreements with seven: Germany, Eswatini, the United Kingdom, Thailand, Turkey, India, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Additional discussions also took place with Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Spain. « Finalizing these agreements is a significant achievement, as it supports the expansion of our air connectivity with these countries », Derjacques told reporters. The SCAA Director General further explained the agreements, highlighting plans to explore direct routes between Seychelles and Asia, in partnership with Malaysia.
Currently, only German airline Condor has begun flights to Seychelles as of September. According to Albert, Lufthansa, Germany’s national airline, has also expressed interest. Seychelles is engaging with other airlines, including Saudi Arabia’s FlyNas and India’s IndiGo, to establish direct flights to the island.
