Implementing innovative fiscal reforms
The Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators (CATA) held its 44th technical conference in Mauritius, bringing together tax experts and policy specialists from across the Commonwealth.
On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, the President of Mauritius, Prithvirajsing Roopun, attended the opening ceremony at the InterContinental Resort Mauritius in Balaclava. The event also featured Sudhamo Lal, Director-General of the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA), Esther Koisin, the newly appointed Director-General of CATA, and other notable figures. This year’s conference, titled « Reshaping Tax Administration in a Rapidly Changing Landscape », underscores the need for tax authorities to respond swiftly to global shifts.
In his opening remarks, President Roopun expressed pride in hosting the CATA Conference in Mauritius. The island nation is known for its progressive and efficient tax administration. The MRA plays a crucial role in governance, transparency, and economic development in the country. He also highlighted the MRA’s role in implementing a series offinancial assistance programs, benefiting employers, employees, small and medium enterprises, and self-employed individuals.
The President emphasized that the MRA has introduced innovative fiscal and technological reforms, such as digital invoicing, virtual MyRA, and electronic tax accounts, all aimed at enhancing tax clarity and efficiency. Additionally, President Roopun pointed out that taxation should serve as an investment in societal development, requiring international cooperation and innovative approaches to establish fair and sustainable systems that promote progress and equity.
