Grand Sud : Developing the Maritime Economy

Promoting essential activities in coastal regions

During the national celebration of World Maritime Day, which began on October 17 in the Anosy region, the crucial importance of the maritime economy for the development of the Grand Sud was highlighted.

This year’s theme focuses on port safety, as ports create added value and generate jobs. Therefore, it is essential to closely examine the safety of marine areas. Madagascar, with its strategic position and key activities, is an island rich in resources. By choosing the topic of « safety » in the region, the aim is to promote essential coastal activities for local and national economic progress.

All the speeches centered on the maritime economy, which authorities plan to leverage as a driver for the development of the Grand Sud. Consequently, the southern gateway remains accessible to all through the Ehoala port, thanks to several projects supported by Rio Tinto and the government of Madagascar. This facilitates the growth of commercial transactions, the development of maritime tourism, and the creation of opportunities in the import-export sectors. Additionally, it is planned for Taolagnaro to receive the National Maritime School (Enem), which will be implemented across the country. Next year, a maritime training school will be established in the Anosy region.

Moreover, Jean Edmond Randrianante-naina, Director-General of the Port, Maritime, and River Agency (APMF), emphasized that numerous projects for port rehabilitation and expansion are underway, while the maritime sector continues to create job opportunities.
