Rehabilitating the Fomboni-Djwaezi Water Network

Equipment received for the work

Equipment for the Fomboni-Djwaezi water supply project has been received by the Mwali authorities. This project, supported by the UNDP, aims to ensure a climate-resilient supply of potable water.

The Indian company Sumadhura took a significant step last Wednesday by transporting a convoy of equipment intended to restore the Djwaezi water supply network to Fomboni, the capital of Mwali Island. The goal of this project is to ensure a climate-resilient supply of potable water to the Comoros. According to the project coordinator, Raouya Madi Bamdou, the aim is to guarantee access to drinking water in 15 regions particularly vulnerable to climate risks.

It’s important to note that in 2022, the Union of the Comoros received financial support from the UNDP’s Green Climate Fund. A budget of 40 million USD was allocated for eight years as part of the Er2c project. The objective of this initiative is to provide a climate-resilient supply of potable water to the 15 regions most vulnerable to climatic hazards.

In Mwali, earthworks on the road leading to the « Dziya Langoma » waterfall, located upstream of the Nyombeni River towards Djwaezi for the planned water flow, began in June 2023. Last June, during a meeting at the Mwali Government Palace, company leaders had predicted that, once this stage was completed, water could be transported to the city following the works. Residents are encouraged to be patient for the greater good.
