Mauritian Prime Minister Receives the Ambassador of the Republic of Ireland

Strengthening bilateral relations between Mauritius and Ireland

On Thursday, October 10, 2024, Austin John Gormley, Ambassador of the Republic of Ireland, paid a courtesy visit to Seychelles’ Prime Minister, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, at the New Treasury Building in Port-Louis.

In a statement issued after the meeting, Austin John Gormley expressed that the encounter with the Prime Minister had been amicable and positive. He highlighted that the discussions focused on improving bilateral relations between Mauritius and Ireland in various sectors such as financial services, tourism, and food. He also mentioned that the issue of the Chagos Archipelago was brought up during the meeting.

Austin John Gormley is Ireland’s Ambassador to South Africa and the Kingdom of Lesotho. He also serves as the designated Ambassador to Botswana, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). In his career, he has also served as the Irish Ambassador to Sweden.

From 2017 to 2020, Austin John Gormley held the position of Director-General of the General Services Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was the Director of the Irish Passport Service from 2015 to 2017. Starting in 2011, he was Consul General in the People’s Republic of China (Shanghai). He had previously served as Director of Communications and Education for the Irish Aid Program.
