Seychelles – United Kingdom : Economic Security Agreement

Strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations

The United Kingdom and Seychelles will continue their collaboration to promote economic growth, with a focus on tackling corruption and addressing climate change as key priorities.

This statement was made by the British Minister for Africa, Lord Collins of Highbury, following a meeting with the President of Seychelles, Wavel Ramkalawan, at State House on Monday. Lord Collins, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and Deputy Leader of the House of Lords, is visiting the island nation until October 9, 2024. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries, focusing on crucial sectors such as economic stability, healthcare financing, and other infrastructure projects.

« Collins announced that we will establish a new partnership for economic security, referencing an agreement aimed at combating illicit financing and promoting greater transparency in Seychelles ». According to him, this partnership will enhance controls, security, and mutual understanding. During his visit to Seychelles, Lord Collins will chair the inaugural meeting of the African Network for Transparency in Beneficial Ownership. The African Development Bank and the UK are co-hosting this event in Seychelles, where African members work together to combat corruption and illicit financing by increasing the visibility of corporate ownership.

This marks the first visit by a British minister to Seychelles since 2013. During his stay, Lord Collins will also engage with civil society organizations working alongside the British High Commission. He is set to announce a healthcare research agreement between the University of Oxford and the University of Seychelles. This partnership aims to bolster research capabilities and create learning opportunities for Seychelles’ government ministries, departments, and agencies.
