Social workers receive their certificates

Advancing professional social work practice

The first group of 22 social workers has earned their diplomas in « Social Work Practice » from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Mauritius (UoM).

The certificate ceremony, organized by the UoM, was attended by notable figures, including the Vice President of the Republic, Eddy Boissézon. The « Social Work Practice » program, launched in 2022 with support from the National Social Inclusion Foundation (NSIF), ran for 18 months. Its purpose was to equip social workers with the essential knowledge and skills needed for professional social work.

In his speech, Professor Sanjeev Kumar Sobhee, Vice Chancellor of UoM, praised the strong partnership between the university, NSIF, and NGOs. He emphasized that the training provided social workers with the practical skills and professionalism required to perform their duties effectively.

Menon Munien, Chairperson of the NSIF Board of Directors, highlighted the global importance of social work, which focuses on promoting social change, resolving conflicts, and empowering vulnerable individuals to become more resilient. Vice President Eddy Boissézon noted that « social entrepreneurship has become our new norm », aligning with the government’s efforts to bring a shift in the NGO sector. This shift aims for sustainability, independence, and improved service delivery to those in need. He also emphasized how social entrepreneurship can drive economic growth and self-reliance while addressing social challenges. A second group of social workers is set to begin training in « Social Work Practice » soon.
