EU-Madagascar : Strengthening cooperation

Presentation of credentials

Roland Kobia, the new European Union Ambassador to Madagascar, has officially presented his credentials to the President of the Republic, marking the beginning of a new chapter in EU-Madagascar relations after the untimely passing of his predecessor, Isabelle Delattre Burger.

« I am focused on the future ». These were the words of Roland Kobia, the newly appointed EU Ambassador, as he presented his credentials to President Andry Rajoelina. His arrival symbolizes the start of « a new chapter » in the partnership between Madagascar and the European Union.

The ambassador emphasized the significance of this formal occasion, with the handover of credentials to the head of state symbolizing the commitment of both parties to revitalizing their diplomatic ties. The President’s swift reception of the ambassador’s credentials signals a mutual readiness to forge ahead with renewed energy in their bilateral relationship. « We discussed a wide range of issues and various areas where we can collaborate further », Kobia stated in response to the media following his audience with President Rajoelina.

During his address to the press, Ambassador Kobia highlighted that his credentials were signed by Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. This gesture underscores the strong backing from the highest levels of the EU for his mission to bolster the relationship with Madagascar.

Although officials often highlight the « excellent » nature of ties between Madagascar and the European Union, recent diplomatic relations have been strained, particularly in light of the circumstances surrounding the early departure of the former EU Ambassador, Isabelle Delattre Burger.
