Strengthening trade relations with Germany

Supporting the country’s industrialization programs

The German Ambassador to Madagascar, Oliver Knoerich, outlines his priorities in the context of German-Malagasy relations.

Improving the efficiency of trade transactions is a key concern for Germany in its bilateral relations with Madagascar. This was emphasized by the German Ambassador, Oliver Knoerich, during the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the African Development Bank.

Madagascar has significant export potential to Germany, particularly in vanilla, with nearly 80 % of Germany’s vanilla consumption sourced from Madagascar. This also applies to spices such as cloves. According to data from the International Trade Centre, the export potential could reach 4.4 million USD.

Germany has already invested 480 million USD in Madagascar. In addition to these areas of collaboration in trade, Germany also supports various other economic sectors, including renewable energy, tourism, and biodiversity conservation. Specifically, renewable energy projects will focus more on the electrification of rural areas.

Former Ambassador Michael Hausler previously mentioned that an 80 million USD portfolio is planned for this purpose at the beginning of the year. He also stated that the embassy would be a key partner in the industrialization sector, assisting the relevant ministry in finding German partners willing to support the country’s industrialization programs.
