Empowering vulnerable women

Providing comprehensive assistance to At-Risk groups

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, in partnership with the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development (MITD), has successfully implemented an economic empowerment program, attended by 32 participants.

On Saturday, August 17, in Phoenix, certificates were awarded to participants following the completion of this transformative workshop. The program is designed to promote the economic independence and self-confidence of vulnerable women, including those who have been victims of domestic violence.

The MITD provided a free 100-hour professional development course, equipping participants with skills in basic aesthetic therapy or hairdressing. Upon completion, the newly certified professionals received toolkits for hairdressing and beauty care, enabling them to start their own ventures or secure employment in these fields. The event was attended by prominent figures, including the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Kalpana Koonjoo-Shah, and MITD President, Harry Krishna Vydelingum.

Minister Koonjoo-Shah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the fundamental values and rights of women, emphasizing the critical need to combat gender-based violence and invest in women’s empowerment. She also highlighted the essential role women play in the socio-economic progress of the country.

Expressing her gratitude to the MITD for its support, the Minister emphasized the importance of partnerships between various organizations in providing more comprehensive assistance to vulnerable groups. She also mentioned the potential expansion of the economic empowerment program, with plans to offer more advanced courses and extend support to a larger number of women.
