Increased productivity at the port

Optimizing port maintenance

Productivity in port container maintenance has increased significantly. From April to July 2024, Cargo Handling Corporation Ltd. (CHCL) recorded an average of 25.9 port movements per hour, compared to a previous average of 22.2 movements per hour.

This increase is primarily attributed to the efforts of CHCL’s staff and management, who have implemented a strategic plan. This plan includes a series of short- and medium-term measures aimed at enhancing the productivity and efficiency of port activities.

One of the planned actions is the exclusive use of the « Multi-Purpose Terminal » for ship reception. This will optimize ports for the maintenance of large containers. Additionally, the plan includes the installation of two mobile cranes to support maintenance operations.

Moreover, the strategy involves investments in online documentation, automated gate control services, and the adoption of systems such as « GPS tracking » and « OCR » for gates. These steps will improve operational management.

In the medium term, CHCL plans to invest in two ports of the Superpost Panama. Six « Ruby Tires Gantry Cranes » have replaced the three Tanjung models. The three Tanjung ports, operational since 1999, were closed in January 2023 on the advice of consultant HPC Hamburg Port Consulting GMBH. CHCL will proceed with trailers and fleet tractors. Implementing the predetermined measures outlined in the strategic plan will require an investment of approximately 47 million USD and will be completed over the next three years.

These comprehensive measures are expected to not only boost productivity but also enhance the overall efficiency and sustainability of port operations, positioning CHCL as a leading entity in the region’s port management industry.
