Projects focused on energy transition
Seychelles aims to attract targeted investments, specifically in energy transition projects like renewable energies and green technologies.
These plans were unveiled by Anne Rosette, Managing Director of the Seychelles Investment Board (SIB), at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The half-day workshop is part of a three-year project aimed at helping the small island state attract investment and financing in alternative energies.
With participation from finance, environmental, and renewable energy sectors, the forum will enhance understanding of the energy transition in the Philippines. According to the Secretary of Agriculture, Climate Change, and Environment, « the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products for its energy needs is becoming increasingly unsustainable due to the uncertainty of supplies and related price variations ».
In recent years, Seychelles has invested in solar farms, the largest of which is on Romainville Island. The French energy company Qair recently signed an agreement with Seychelles to install a 5-megawatt photovoltaic (PV) system in Providence lagoon, on the east coast of Mahé.
