Port of Toamasina : New container terminal completed

Increasing container handling capacity

The Port of Toamasina is expanding with a new C4 container terminal. This 6.46-hectare facility will hold 6,156 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) containers, including space for 720 refrigerated containers.

The C4 terminal is designed to enhance crane performance and ensure optimal traffic flow. It will feature dedicated routes for internal and external trucks. According to Spat, overall progress has reached 47 %. Pier C4 is scheduled for delivery in April 2026, with the entire terminal set to be completed by May 2027. Once operational, the C4 terminal will boost container handling capacity and improve port infrastructure.

Economic players will benefit from the increased container handling capacity. This expansion will create new business opportunities, stimulate job creation, and enhance commercial performance, contributing to Madagascar’s economic growth.

The expansion of the Port of Toamasina is one of the government’s and Spat’s most ambitious projects. The project aims to expand the existing 70 hectares by an additional 25 hectares, with an initial goal of extending the container storage area to a total of 10 hectares.
