Catalyzing Rodrigues as a hub of activity
The investment marks a significant milestone for Rodrigues with the upcoming construction of the Plaine-Corail runway. This infrastructure will bolster connectivity between the island and the global community.
The 2.1 km-long runway, costing 170 million USD, will accommodate a Boeing 737 and an Airbus A321. Beginning in 2025, the government plans to allocate 30 million USD to kick-start the project. Additionally, 900 million rupees are earmarked over the next four years to enhance the island’s water and electricity infrastructure.
In water distribution, 11 million USD is allocated for the construction of a desalination plant at Pointe-Coton, capable of producing 3,500 m3 daily. Construction has commenced, with completion expected by July 2025. To foster Rodrigues’ transformation into a green island, the government will implement strategies to reduce carbon consumption in the island’s electricity grid. Moreover, freight costs between Mauritius and Rodrigues will be reduced by 20 %. Additionally, resources will be allocated to finance expenses related to testing, analysis, and certification of products for Rodrigues’ SMEs.
