Identifying sustainable, high-performance solutions for Mauritius and Réunion
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade is organizing two workshops on solid waste management and the transition to biomass energy.
These discussions are part of the Mauritius-Reunion Joint Commission. The opening ceremony took place on May 17, 2024, at the Economic Development Board (EDB) in Ebène. The event was attended by Kavy Ramano, Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management, and Climate Change; Mahen Seeruttun, Minister of Agribusiness and Food Security; and Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, Secretary of State for Development and International Partnerships of the French Republic.
The aim is to unite public officials and private sector players to explore sustainable, high-performance solutions for Mauritius and Reunion. Kavy Ramano emphasized the importance of these workshops in strengthening local and regional waste management systems. Mauritius saw a 19% increase in solid waste production from 2010 to 2020, with over 33% growth in the last 20 years. In 2023 alone, over 541,000 tonnes of solid waste were generated, and if this trend continues, it is projected to reach around 650,000 tonnes.
The government has begun implementing measures to replace the current linear production, consumption, and disposal model. A solid waste management strategy and action plan have been developed to address this issue.
