Strengthening cooperative ties with Africa

Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan received an invitation to participate in the inaugural South Korea-Africa Summit in June. The invitation was extended by the newly-accredited ambassador representing the South Korean government.

Kang Jung formally presented his credentials to the President at the State House. The upcoming South Korea-Africa Summit, slated for June 4th and 5th in Seoul, serves as a platform for discussing a range of topics of mutual interest, including economic, political, and social cooperation. Additionally, the summit aims to advance initiatives aimed at bolstering multilateral relations between Korea and African countries.

The new ambassador told reporters that the summit is an opportunity to « enhance bilateral relations between South Korea and the Seychelles ». The Korean diplomat also spoke of other areas of cooperation between the two sides to build closer relations through human exchanges and institutional cooperation.

Jung added that these would be either tourists, businessmen or government representatives « we agreed that we should bring more people to Seychelles ».

In addition to the aforementioned topics, both countries intend to delve into further avenues of collaboration, such as the blue economy, fisheries, tourism, and digitalization. Ambassador Jung highlighted these as areas where South Korea possesses expertise. It’s noteworthy that Seychelles established diplomatic ties with South Korea on January 29, 1995. The new ambassador will operate from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
