Mauritius unanimously awarded in four major tourism categories
The WTA is an annual event that honors and celebrates the best destinations in various fields such as travel, tourism and hospitality. It is considered the most prestigious awards program in the international tourism industry.
Winners are determined by votes from travel industry professionals and the general public. The winners were announced at an evening event at Atlantis The Royal in Dubai. Tropical forests, wild waterfalls, unique wildlife, rugged mountains, white palm-fringed beaches, high-end luxury villas, romantic settings and a commitment to sustainable tourism made Mauritius stand out from the crowd. As such, Mauritius was nominated and awarded in four categories:
- Best Tourism Industry in the Indian Ocean
- Best Wedding Destination in the Indian Ocean
- Best Sustainable Tourism Destination in the Indian Ocean
- Best Cruise Destination in the Indian Ocean
« We are honored by this recognition of excellence and proud to have won these four awards. Mauritius offers a wide range of immersive experiences and is much more than an island, it is an island nation that caters to a diverse range of tourism segments », said Arvind Bundhun, Director of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority.
« The interest generated by the World Travel Awards 2023 shows that the appetite for travel and tourism has never been stronger. This bodes well for the future of the industry. The winners represent the very best of travel and tourism in the Indian Ocean, and I congratulate each and every one of them. They have all shown remarkable resilience in these difficult times » ,said Graham Cooke, founder of the World Travel Awards.
These awards are all the more logical given the importance of tourism to Mauritius’ GDP, which stands at around 24 %.
