Mission to discover the marine depths

On January 13, 2024, OceanX launched its first expedition in the Seychellois waters. After leaving Seychelles, the non-profit organization will set up in Southeast Asia.

The expedition enters in the partnership between the Government of Seychelles and OceanX to utilize the versatile OceanXplorer platform for deep-sea research. The Seychellois team includes scientists from the Ministry of Environment, Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA), Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF), Save our Seas Foundation Seychelles (SOSF), University of Seychelles (UniSey), Island Conservation Society (ICS) and other local scientists.

Recognized for its robust scientific research, cutting-edge technology, experiential education, and accessible media, OceanX is a global advocate for ocean health. Its mission is to help scientists explore the ocean while protecting it to inspire positive change.

The Seychelles-OceanX expedition will provide invaluable data to support the sustainable development of the blue economy and the management of Seychelles’ vast marine territory. During the month-long mission, local scientists from various disciplines will explore and conduct research on a variety of topics. The expedition aims to fill gaps in systematic data collection by extending observations to depths of at least 2,000 meters. This will enable a comprehensive understanding of biodiversity patterns and how they vary based on location and depth.

Other research areas include visual monitoring of marine animals, birds, sea turtles, sharks, rays, as well as marine debris. Upon completion of the expedition, the Ministry of Environment and its partners will hold a joint press conference to provide an overview of the expedition and share information on post-expedition priorities.
